Tips For Properly Grooming Your Yorkie’s Hair
It is important to keep your Yorkie well-groomed in order to maintain their overall health. Properly caring for your Yorkie will help you discover problems before they occur, and spending time grooming your Yorkie also gives you quality bonding time with your pet.
When grooming your Yorkie, you should always keep their nails clipped, examine their ears, and keep their teeth clean. The most important part of a Yorkie is taking care of their coat. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your Yorkie’s hair:
1 – Brushing
A Yorkie’s hair is much like a human’s hair, meaning it needs the same upkeep. Brushing a Yorkie’s hair should be completed daily, and the hair should be conditioned before brushing. Gently brush from the root to the tip with the lie of the hair. Try to work out any knots with your fingers first before using a brush. Don’t forget to brush around the Yorkie’s face and ears, but be careful around their eyes.
2 – Bathing
You should bathe your Yorkie at least once or twice a month. Start by wetting your Yorkie and then covering with shampoo. After rinsing the shampoo off, you should then use a conditioner. Use a shampoo and conditioner that is made for Yorkie’s or dogs, because shampoo and conditioner made for humans contain a different pH balance. After completing the bath, dry your dog with a towel or pet dryer and start brushing their hair to keep it straight and to prevent knots.
3 – Trimming
A Yorkie’s coat should be trimmed monthly or bi-monthly depending on coat size. Excess hair around the feet should be cut using standard hair-cutting scissors with rounded tips. Also, keep the hair around a Yorkie’s ear trimmed to highlight their upright point. If you are not comfortable with trimming any of your Yorkie’s coat, take your Yorkie to a professional.
Always keep your Yorkie groomed to help them look and feel their best. If you would like more information on grooming your Yorkie, please check out our other grooming articles.
What is the best shampoo for my senior Morkie? I’ve not been able to find one that keeps her shiny silky and soft
Hi Carrie,
I’m going to check on the differences in the hair, if any, from Yorkie to Morkie and we’ll find some recommendations for you.
My friend has never really trained the yorkie even from puppyhood. She is now 7 yrs. old and deficates – not pees- all over the house. Then, she blames the dog and the dog gets sad. It is not the dog’s fault. How can I train the yorkie and explain to the owner to change her attitude?
Because this yorkie was never really trained, then take the yorkie back to basics and treat her like a puppy. Start by monitoring the dog’s food and water intake, and use the crate during downtime. Consistency makes a big difference, so be sure to take the dog out at the same time each day, and designate a specific spot for potty breaks. Pretend the yorkie is a puppy or newly adopted. Take the yorkie out frequently and, when it uses the potty in the right place, make sure you are giving the dog rewards. It feels funny to give a reward for what they know how to do, but it’s a refresher course.
My yorkie is 12 yrs old he has been getting a lot of skin tags, and he chews them what can I do to prevent him from chewing.
