It is important to keep your Yorkie well-groomed in order to maintain their overall health. Properly caring for your Yorkie will help you discover problems before they occur, and spending time grooming your Yorkie also gives you quality bonding time with your pet, because Yorkie’s make great companions and little friends.
When grooming your Yorkie, you should always keep their nails clipped, examine their ears, and keep their teeth clean. The most important part of grooming a Yorkie though is taking care of their coat.
Here are a few Yorkie grooming tips to help you maintain your Fur-babies’ hair:
1 – Brushing
A Yorkie’s hair is much like a human’s hair, meaning it needs the same upkeep. Brushing a Yorkie’s hair should be completed daily, and the hair should be conditioned before brushing. Gently brush from the root to the tip with the lie of the hair. Try to work out any knots with your fingers first before using a brush. Don’t forget to brush around the Yorkie’s face and ears, but be careful around their eyes.
2 – Bathing
You should bathe your Yorkie at least once a week. Start by wetting your Yorkie and then covering with shampoo. After rinsing the shampoo off, you should then use a conditioner. Use a shampoo and conditioner that is made for Yorkie’s or dogs, because shampoo and conditioner made for humans contain a different pH balance. After completing the bath, dry your dog with a towel or pet dryer and start brushing their hair to keep it straight and to prevent knots.
3 – Trimming
A Yorkie’s coat should be trimmed monthly or bi-monthly depending on coat size. Excess hair around the feet should be cut using standard hair-cutting scissors with rounded tips. Also, keep the hair around a Yorkie’s ear trimmed to highlight their upright point. If you are not comfortable with trimming any of your Yorkie’s coat, take your Yorkie to a professional.
